Koay Teow Th'ng Fried Koay Teow   Assam Laksa Beef Noddles Loh Mee Pemsebur Nasi kandar Nasi Melayu

Curry Mee

Ayer Itam with its abundance of Mint leaves and Bunga Kantan flowers is home to Assam Laksa and Curry Mee.

The stall opens for short hours. 7.00 am -9.30 am. It was tucked in a little little lane and in front of a church. There is only one stand alone church in Air Itam. No! excluding those converted from residential houses.

The Ah H'uey stall have being in operation from this shack since I was a boy. The business is now handled over to the son.

Those staying in Penang have adopted that "Penang" taste of Curry Mee - prepared in chalky white coconut milk soup. When the word "Curry" is heard, we would assumed that the usual reddish Curry soup would be served. Up till now, I still do not know how this concept evolved and where did it originated.

The noodles served almost white soup but also together with a varying proportion of pure Curry paste. As you stir to blend the concoctions the soup would  soon overwhelmed by the rich red chilly and oil.

Over the years and with more people, more stalls, bigger variations have turned up. But so far, none overtaking the taste of this stall. Not with that strong fragrance of lemon grass. I agree with my friend Ah Beng who operate the same outfit in Sri Damansara, the niche lies in the fragrances of the Chili bowl. Even his was no where in flavor as compared to Ah Huey of Air Itam.

Next to his stall, a Siamese lady serving the same. You have to sit on low stools to have your meals. One of the rare sights left in our society.

Left ;- Customers on low stools

Contended to remain in this ever growing community but in the diminishing quarters. See, Air Itam had changed. These days, the crowded areas are Thien Teik Estate or Farlim, the new name. Air Itam market after the morning flare is a dead village center.

Ah Huey a die-hard continuing the traditions, he serves his group of regulars who do not get tired of his taste. They did not. Like me.There he is again and the few tables behind him. Most of his sales are take away. Housewives buying breakfast for the family.

Alternatives -Apart from this very well patronized stall, try his competitor who was just beside him

Apart from mentioning my favorite stalls, I had the chances of trying out others. You know, no hawker center can afford to be without one stall offering Curry Mee. My first choice was of course Lorong Seratus Tahun. They have branch opened in the SS2 area of Petaling Jaya. This stall handled the morning crowd. Business was brisk and the crowd was good. The taste was definitely better than that offered in PJ. Perhaps the turn-over and freshness of materials.

Then, no one could resist checking out the Pulau Tikus Market. My comment would be the taste from this stall was average. Pardon me, could be biased.

OK, then I would not comment about all the good stalls in Song River, Gurney Drive. Many sites and even brochures from the Tourism Department speak highly of this cluster of hawker stalls. Like my earlier comments on other pages of mine. The timing in the evening, the ambience and the company. These factors obviously make the meals enjoyable. So to say that taste from these stalls are not in the niche, may cause myself to be seen in poor lights.
