Nasi Kandar  - Line Clear - Penang Road

Nasi kandar is synonymous Penang.

This type of serving shot into fame when some one started running 24 hours. It was by necessity, the workers in the market started their day at 3.00 am. Then night revelers would not call it quit until 2.00 am. Purely co-incidental. before that even up till now, no single type of food would please these diverse groups of people.

Those from my age group would cherish the days of Caravan "A"

Today - many came and many gone. Every one is claiming that they have found the stall they like best.

My choice is this guy in the lane

Sandwiched between 2 other identical type of outlets, this guy thrive.

In fact I get a bit suspicious one day when I saw the food dispatched from one of the restaurants. Line Clear, first time, I ever notice this name, since  leaving Penang for Kuala Lumpur. It had earned its reputation through lots of praises from patrons and the press. Adequate publicity. The old boss speaking fluent Hokkien and some Cantonese.

Here is the so-called dinning area. There were constant walk-in by people from all walks of life.

In this way, you can understand how such outlet could churn out a consistent quality.

They kept cooking and serving. This stall from 10.30 am till 2.00 am..

Gone are the days we eat at 4.00 am upon arrival in Chowrasta Market. We were forced to be contended with the old Federal Route 1.

Imagine, we still have our Nasi Kandar. That was how nostalgic, the food made us.

Didn't see my old kaki this time when the photographs was taken .

Nice things about Nasi kandar in Penang, is the mood how your mood is served

Like many other food, they are pre-cooked. Then you mix and match your fancy. No - here, they look at you, as if studying your character and preferences. Almost reading your mind, enhances your choice with very appropriate recommendations. Of course, they charge you accordingly.

But for us, having said that, I think statement about leaving the choice of food to the vendor  may not be apt to everybody. I do the opposite. I go for the taste of the curry sauces and avoid high cost items. My favorite is chumpor and mandi! During our school days, we could only afford a 15 cts Nasi kandar. That speaks much about what I got and my age!

In this lane, what a cooperative group of vendors, our friend here doing his roti.

Mmm____ long time. I should compare his preparation with that of Hamideed down the corner at Campbell Street!

We loved it for being crispy

Then being creature of habits we fell in love with this place.

This guys here was for my Nescafe tarik. Very creamy and no comparison [except for those Chinese White Coffee in old town Ipoh]

So this lane has all the food to restrain us from eating elsewhere for the next 4 hours.

Alternatives -There are many small Nasi Kandar stalls serving very good tasting food. But they open for business to the breakfast and lunch crowd.

The next 2 outlets chosen in my opinion, are no longer among the best. They are 24 hours outlets. Those of you can jive in  your busy schedule to try them out.

Nasi Kandar  - Brick Kiln Road

With Caravan "A" outlet [which is still in operation] slipping into oblivion, customers need to seek out other more dynamic outlets. Very normal, some small stalls. Like the one I found in Kampong Pisang Ayer Itam. But let's stick with those in town. Geographically, it makes more sense for those out-of-state visitors.

This next one was at the other end of Penang Road. Georgetown most busiest junctions. What local called "Goh Pah Teng". Used to be a round about with 5 junctions. Penang Road, Dato Kramat, Brick Kiln Road, Prangin Road and Magazine Street.

This outlet is just across the street of Cravan "A" and Gamma.

Very popular for visitors arriving by road into the town. By way of the bridge and ferry, the location is on the way. A picture of teh shop front. I needed better quality picture now, since this one seems fading away.

The eatery had over spilled and  expanded into the side lane. This usage perhaps has its way of crating an ambience.

An attraction to out door dinning.

From the days of the stall beside the Mosque in Pitt Street, customers believe in hide-outs. They served the best food and value for money. "Eating in the Alley"  Looked like the trend are in and around the Penang Road area.

Surprising the bulk of customers are non Muslim, eating in a mixed community. As the migration away from the urban downtown continues, these good stalls serving food for years will be phased out. Squeezed out by low patronage.

Nasi Kandar  -  Chowrasta Market

In Lorong Tamil, I code-named the place Chowrasta Market. Oh, these shops, now there are 2 beautiful shops. Side by side with one another. To tap on the hive of activities in the market during the wee hours of the morning. That is where freshly prepared food are consumed.

Over the years now, their patronage was going like a Jo-Jo. Increased popularity to non market going crowd and on the other hand, decreased with the migrations of its hard core supporters. The workers in the market. . It is still well patronized. But, followers like me, need not make a bee line for it! Traveling pattern changed.

Here another picture trying to get both of the shops into the same frame.

Nicest thing here was that food from both outlets are comparable. Sometimes, if our visit to the shop co-incided with the time when their food was running low, we  always take the alternative.

A view of stall with office workers arriving for their late lunch

Overall, this place thrives with thee bustling of activities in the middle of the night.

Words of its popularity went out. New crowd enter the arena of fun.

In a contra flow, with a smaller market crowd, the slowing down is setting in.

The spillover of the "by words of mouth" publicity in drawing in the food tasting crowd. Is there any taste so special here. Or just being with the Jones at the right place and time makes us happy. Or  that we visited one joint with good tasting foods.
