"Lor Mee"

This noodle is served with a starchy soup of black sauce and stewed lean meat.

The Hokkien in Penang prepares a darker and thicker version. Comparatively, the Hainanese in mid-country here - Kuala Lumpur do have their own version "Lam Mee". This preparation also uses Soya Sauce, sees a lighter color and less thick sauce. with a lighter sauce.

Coming back to the version in Penang, the sauce is heavily scented with 5-spices powder and the compliment used, prickled chopped Garlic.

This is a relatively unknown hawker center in Presgreave Street. We searched and fund it upon after being tipped

Now coming to this "new found" eating place. I was charmed, actually after several trips. When it comes to good tasting foods, I have seen recommendations that repeatedly mentioned different type of stalls from one same location. It takes some "believing" to accept that co-incidence.

First time, I am doing that myself. There were 3 stalls, Hokkien Mee, Ice Kachang and Fried Oyster here serve very tasty food. This is out of the total of over 10 stalls serving food.

Here is the frontage of the Stall and the prices that they charge. Most people patronize the stall for their Prawn Mee with add-ons. We choose the Lor Mee.

Main reason is that we seldom get stalls that serve a decent preparation. Here we had a stall that did Lor Mee as a supplement, yet we choose it.

Another view of the place managed by a young lady and her team of friendly crew. Since finding this place years back, business had grown.

In April 2006, we found that they had converted the ground floor of the whole house as sitting area.

Something they have done well here. Good quality and tasty "Add-Ons"

Taste buds have varied some time back. Customers felt that they needed more than the basic noodle soup to satisfy their hunger. They wanted "Good" tasty food. So, it meant more supplements to enhance their meals. Displayed here are choices like  boiled pig skin, boiled small intestine and eggs.

The niche here as we analyzed is the soup - just the correct thickness and well flavored. Good preparation of the garlic sauce as enhancement. The supplements are equally good. Hard to resist the temptation of ordering added supply of intestine and skin. Nothing but praises to lure you to try it for yourself. That is if you fancy such food!

The stall is at the junction of Presgreaves Street and McNair Street Opens at night and charges only Rgt 2.50 per helping without extras!

Alternatives   "Loh Mee"

Apart from this unknown stall, Lor Mee is available in almost every Hawker Center. No! not a different type of noodle, but rather different taste by another hawker.

From the looks of stall and through recommendation, this stall in Pitt Street may have been the market leader for a long while.

This stall opened for business in the morning till lunch. In the afternoon, apart from those devotees in the Temple, this  part of town was absolutely quiet.

As you can see, the outside of the shop is of classical designs.

The shop was just next to the famous Kwan Yin temple of Pitt Street. Separated by a street corner of Stewart Lane.

There were not that many of other hawkers in this coffee shop. In fact the population base for the district had gradually eroded.

The "Old Town" center syndrome.

The coffee shop of regular size was barely full, All here for the noodles.

The serving here was good. I could see the reasons for its decline. The opening hours were tuned to those of the office workers. Then he maintained to serve only noodles with a sprinkle of minced prawn meat and pork. No attractions or Add-On.

These 2 stalls selected for mentioning are classic example to the theme of this site.

Good tasting food and a tasting meals. Without passing any judgment, the taste of the lower stall may be marginally better but the first stall was selected by me. The opening time suits my lifestyle. I am not going to drive in the wee hours through the traffic, each and every time I fancy to get my bowl of noodles.

Next, the lack of selection. My companion is forced to eat what I fancy.  Last, the needs. People, even though they like Lor Mee, they like choices too. The new stalls cater to these needs.

At the end of the day - What is this "best" hawker stall?
