Good Hainanese Cooking style Sea-food. |
|
Just a small settlement by an unknown estuary, named Tanjong Tengkorak. Half way between the towns of Tanjong Karang and Sekinchan |
![]() |
What type of food? This is the place of home cooking -Hainanese style It purportedly serve seafood and in fact known as a seafood restaurant. Another one of those by the seas. You could go in, order your favorite seafood meals or noodles.
|
Who goes there? The place is patronized by the local fishermen for snacks. Mainly small meals. Then there are the traveling sales personals. They too stop there for some simple food. Fried rice or fried noodles. Lately, people outside of the settlement started patronizing the place. As early as 2000. They all were there for different reasons and their choices of servings. What do I think?Although the restaurant could prepare a whole array of seafood and Cantonese style cooking as well, I would stay on to the few dishes that I know, they do best. This is nothing fancy. One of them that they did extremely well was the Baby Sting Ray steamed in plain Soya sauce. The other - Cat fishes stewed in thick sour sauce is not my favorite. The fishes used are too skinny with little meat. How to get thereLook at the sketch here. After Tanjong Karang town, proceed north to Sekinchan. This place is the tip of a small fishing community and a dead end road. If you have a GPS, the co-ordinates are there. If you don't, then leave the town, cross the river and out of the urban area. watch that school on your left. After the school the road turns slightly right, whereas there is a small road that runs almost straight from the main road. No signboard!. Now that straight line on the map is the coastal road, while the one that bends right is the trunk road. At the point where the word "Seafood" is, there is a slip road that allows a turn off back to the trunk road. This coastal road is about 5 kilometers. This road used to be rustic passing through coconut plantation and Malay kampong. Today, those scenes are gone. The side of the narrow road cleared of bushes and the kampong houses turned into that of bricks. Out of the plantation, the paved road would make a sharp left hand turn. Suddenly the temple and houses on stilts appear. Another 200 meters, the paved road ends, and another pavilion appears with an open space car park. A scene as seen from the window of the restaurant at the estuary. It was high tide and the boats were parked. Walk from your car and be greeted by the Boardwalk. There is the restaurant. I think it has got a name! Take the left turning on the Boardwalk. This is a distributor for shellfish. The heap of white colored slope you see on the right edge? These are the accumulated shells. Of course, that is the restaurant as seen from the side. The part with the red chairs barely visible are for guest. That is the small annex on the left. The place is equivalent to the gathering joint for the locals, when they had finished their work. The story behindIt is the weekend once again! Where shall we go this time? There is exactly this place, very remote and exotic. Depends on your taste of traveling. If you do not like driving a or irks! at dirty places, then this is definitely not the place. This place has all the ambience of Pulau Ketam with it simple restaurant and long boardwalk lined with houses. Mind you, no more such scenes and prices in Pulau Ketam.Vincent's verdict - "Yaks! Look at all the rubbish?" While Yeap said " If you think that the prices in Pasir Penampang is cheap, then in Tengkorak, the price is half!" But that comment sent me here in 1999. Today, prices is Kuala Selangor cannot be called "Cheap" and here no more than ridiculously low prices. Forget about price for a while, there are a couple of dishes prepared by this pair Hainanese couple, that taste better than many elsewhere. What would I recommend? The restaurant is operated by a couple assisted by a couple of female workers. The husband does the cooking while the wife looks after the guest, discussed the orders, serving and collecting the bills. After all the visits here, I find that the best that they can offer was limited to a few tasty and outstanding dishes. In an order, I would choose Soya sauce steam baby ray-fishes. Deep fried Crayfishes meat with dry chili. Fried Crab in Chili sauce and Sweat sour stew of baby Catfishes. Overall , their cooking style and taste was more than acceptable. But considering the distance to travel, the serving must commensurate with the effort taken by us. Prices charged was ridiculously low some years back. Now it is marginally cheaper than Kuala Selangor. If you are looking for somewhere exotic and do not mind driving, then this is the place. The ambience? It is in the extremities. |
